The dad of Ireland’s most famous pop twins has been appointed a Peace Commissioner for county Kildare and surrounding counties.

Rathangan resident, John Grimes, who is originally a native of Limerick, was appointed to the role last Friday February 28 by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter.

A peace commissioner is an honorary appointment. The powers and duties of a peace commissioner consist primarily of taking statutory declarations, witnessing signatures or documents if required by various authorities and signing certificates and orders under various Acts. There are no qualifications required to be a peace commissioner although the appointee must be of good character.

Local solicitor and Fine Gael candidate for the forthcoming local elections Mark Stafford said “ I am delighted that John Grimes has been appointed a peace commissioner for the local area. There has been no appointment in the Rathangan area for many years and there is an established need. This appointment will also be of assistance to the local Gardai who use the services of a peace commissioner in the course of their duties”.
